As we say Hello to September, we are sadly drawing an end to summer. The past 8 months have flown by, right? Some of us have had an amazing year thus far, whilst for others it may have been terrible. Regardless of how your year has gone, it is not too late to turn things around!
Some of you may be waiting for 2017 to start a clean slate, after all, “New Year, New Me” right? Wrong. The truth is, if you are waiting for the right time or moment to achieve something, then you will be waiting forever. There never really is a “right time” for anything, so why not start now? I know it can seem a little scary, but if you don’t try then how can you succeed? Using myself as an example, I have wanted to start a Blog for years but was always waiting for the right time. Guess what? The right time never came. Even now, I am making errors and learning from them, but I have come to learn that it is the mistakes in life that helps shape us to become who we are.
So where do you start? Most importantly, you need to set yourself some goals. Having a clear set of goals allows you to have focus and long-term vision for your future. I am no goal setting expert and these may not be useful to some of you, but I would like to share 8 goal-setting tips with you all:
- Get yourself a notebook!
Yes I know it is 2016 and we are the generation of evolving technology, but I find that when I write notes in my phone or laptop, they tend to stay there and are very rarely revisited. Also, I feel that when goals are written down, it gives them more power.
- Evaluate and reflect on your life.
Sometimes we can be a little harsh on ourselves so it is important to take time to look back at what you have accomplished in life, reflect on where you are now and decide what you really want in life. For some, deciding what you want in life is not an easy process. I myself have struggled with this but you have to ask yourself what brings you the feelings of joy and excitement, and what you would try if you were guaranteed to succeed.
- Be true to yourself, always.
Some people get caught up in trying to create a life that looks good rather than one that feels good on the inside. There have been times when I’ve thought I wanted certain things or careers in life, when deep down it wasn’t for me. You need to listen to within, follow your heart and gut feelings because what is for you will always be for you.
- Set yourself goals within goals.
What I mean by this is, set yourself overall long-term goals, and then set yourself specific short-term goals in order to achieve your long-term goals. You may not progress as quick as you want to, but as long as you are pursuing your short-term goals, you are on the right path to achieving your long-term goals. Remember that small progress is still progress.
- Dream big but be realistic.
Your long-term goals need to be big enough to take you out of your comfort zone yet realistic and achievable. Only you know what you are capable of achieving, but don’t be afraid to push yourself because you may be surprised in what you can actually achieve.
- Quality over quantity.
It is hard to achieve when you have too much to focus on. Prioritise a small number of significant goals that mean the most to you. The fewer goals you have to focus on, the more energy you have to invest in each goal.
- Set yourself deadlines.
I say this because on countless occasions I have set myself goals that have never been achieved simply because I believed I had all the time in the world! Setting yourself deadlines is a great way of measuring your progress as you can tick each goal off once accomplished.
- Stay focused on your own goals.
The moment you start watching what others are doing is the moment you lose track of your own goals. You need to remember that you are on a completely different journey to everybody else so you need stop comparing yourself, instead invest your energy into becoming a better version of yourself.
Thank you for taking time out to read my blogpost.
I wish you all nothing but happiness, fulfilment and growth for the rest of 2016. G x
