10 reasons to Love your curls.

From as young as I can remember, I struggled with embracing my natural curly hair. Being one of very few children of ethnic origin within the school, I struggled with being different and envied my classmates’ sleek straight hair. For years I begged my parents for hair straighteners so that I could fit in with everybody else. After several years of heat damage and slicking my hair back, I finally began to discover the beauty of having natural curly hair.

My curly hair is a huge part of my identity (no pun intended) and I can’t believe that I once took it for granted!!!

So if you have been in a similar situation or have a friend, daughter, sister or aunty who struggles to embrace their natural curly hair, this one is for you!

10 reasons to LOVE your curls:

  1. We stand out!

There is no doubt that curly hair stands out in a crowd, literally. It is unique, bold and people tend to be fascinated with it.

  1. Curly hair is versatile.

Curly hair can be styled in various different ways. We can leave it down, throw it up in a messy bun, a simple ponytail, half up half down and so on. The choices are endless. We also have the option of wearing our hair straight on occasions.

  1. Whatever the weather.

We can embrace our curls in any weather. We do not need to hide from the rain because we don’t need to worry about keeping our hair sleek and straight. Can I add that we can go swimming and not worry about our hair getting wet! Water is a curls best friend.

  1. We smell almost edible!

“Girls with natural hair smell like tropical paradises, coconuts and fruit salads.” This is true. I mean, who wouldn’t want hair that smells so good you could almost eat it?

  1. Our topknot buns look like art.

Let’s face it; we have the best messy buns! Our wild and wonderful hair makes buns that are full of life and artfully messy. My hair spends 70% of its time in a messy bun; this is my go-to hairstyle!

  1. We can wear our hair messy.

Even when we think that our hair is a mess, non-curlys do not know the difference and still think our hair is amazing. Result!

  1. Our hair keeps us warm in the winter.

Who cares if we struggle to fit a hat over our curly ‘fros, we don’t need it!

  1. We can sweat as much as we want.

Whether we are on the treadmill at the gym, shaking a leg at a nightclub or on an exotic beach, we can sweat without the worry of sweating our hair out.

  1. Volume!

Our hair is full and voluminous. We do not need any mousse, hairspray or volumizing hair products, as our hair is naturally big. Rawr!

  1. Natural hair is healthy.

Using hair straighteners, blow dryers, curling tongs, and relaxers result in dryness, split ends and breakage. Keeping our hair natural promotes thickness, growth and strength. It is as simple as that.

Now, if that is not enough reasons to love your curls then I don’t know what else! Whilst some of you are desperately trying to change your hair or are wishing that you had straight hair, remember that there are people in this world that would do anything to have hair like yours! Love your natural hair because it is ALL yours.

Own it and embrace it, because curly haired girls rock!

Love always, G x

Hi Gina I’m one of Julia Brown’s granddaughters,Trinity (I’m 10), and I love your page about natural hair.I do believe that you should express it and love it in every way although I’ll have to try and convince my parents to let my hair be out.(btw I also think that you should have a little group or people to send pictures of their hair and the before and after of like their hair in extensions or unnatural even if they know it’s curly or things like that, focusing more about the young children that wouldn’t like their hair to be thick or to be natural and take some pictures of some people you know, like me, that have natural curly hair and also commenting on it)Thank you for being a role model to not only me but other young people in the world to love their natural hair just the way it is.💇

Hey Trinity! I am really glad that you enjoyed reading this page and that I have inspired you, this makes me very happy. I am tired of society telling us that we have to be a certain way to be beautiful, when we should all just be and love ourselves for who we are. Also, I think the group idea is a great idea! I will definitely look into this and would love to get you involved.

Thank you very much for sharing my blogpost with Trinity, I am glad that you enjoyed reading this also! ‘May the rest of your life be the best of your life’, I love this quote! Yours too. x

      Love G x
